Question 1

How much rain does Mumbai get during the monsoon season?

Accepted Answer

Mumbai received roughly 2,190 mm (86.2 inches) of rain during the 2025 monsoon season from June to September, accounting for about 87% of the city's entire annual rainfall. Mumbai's monsoon is intense but tightly concentrated into these four months.

The wettest month was June 2025, when Mumbai recorded 657.5 mm (25.9 inches) of rain. August followed closely with 580.4 mm (22.9 inches), then July at 493.2 mm (19.4 inches) and September at 458.5 mm (18.1 inches). Across the full calendar year, the city's total precipitation reached 2,519.9 mm (99.2 inches), so the June to September stretch clearly dominates.

These monsoon months are also humid and overcast. Average relative humidity sat near 87%, and the four months together saw only about 667 hours of sunshine, roughly a third of the bright, dry months on either side. By contrast, December through March 2025 recorded essentially no measurable rain at all.

For visitors, this means the monsoon delivers dramatic, heavy downpours rather than light drizzle, often causing waterlogging and travel disruption across Mumbai. If you prefer dry, sunny conditions, the post-monsoon and winter window from November to March is far more comfortable, while June to September suits travelers who do not mind frequent, intense rain.

Question 2

When is the hottest time of year in Mumbai?

Accepted Answer

The hottest time of year in Mumbai is the pre-monsoon period from March to May, with April 2025 ranking as the warmest month at an average temperature of 29.8°C (85.6°F).

Across this March–May stretch in 2025, Mumbai averaged 29.3°C (84.8°F), and daytime highs were consistently fierce, averaging 39.2°C (102.5°F). The single hottest readings of the year reached 40.7°C (105.3°F), recorded in both March and April 2025. Even overnight there was little relief in April, when the average low held at a warm 23.1°C (73.6°F).

A key feature of this season is rising humidity as it progresses. Humidity climbed from 50.6% in March to 68.3% in April and 77.3% in May 2025, so the later weeks feel increasingly muggy and oppressive even when the thermometer dips slightly. By comparison, the coolest month of the year was December 2025 at 25.0°C (77.0°F), and the annual mean temperature in Mumbai was 27.2°C (81.0°F).

For travelers, this means March through May is the most demanding time to visit Mumbai for outdoor sightseeing. Plan activities for early morning or evening, stay well hydrated, and seek shade or air conditioning during the midday peak. The arrival of the monsoon in June brings cloud cover that caps daytime highs and ends the most intense heat.

Question 3

Which months are the sunniest in Mumbai?

Accepted Answer

**March is the sunniest month in Mumbai, recording 360 hours of sunshine in 2025 — roughly 11.6 hours of sun per day.** The clearest skies fall in the dry pre-monsoon and winter months, when rain is virtually absent.

Across 2025, Mumbai enjoyed about 3,211 hours of sunshine in total, averaging close to 8.8 hours per day. The four brightest months were all clustered in the dry season:

- **March:** 360 hours (≈11.6 h/day)
- **April:** 341 hours (≈11.4 h/day)
- **December:** 340 hours (≈11.0 h/day)
- **January:** 338 hours (≈10.9 h/day)

The contrast with the monsoon is dramatic. July was by far the cloudiest month in Mumbai, with just 135 hours of sunshine — only about 4.4 hours per day, or roughly one-third of March's total. June through September stayed overcast as heavy rain dominated the city.

If you are planning sightseeing, beach time, or photography, the most reliable sun in Mumbai runs from November through April. March pairs long sunny days with warm conditions, averaging 29.2°C (84.6°F), while December offers slightly cooler comfort at 25.0°C (77.0°F) alongside nearly 340 hours of sun. These dry, bright stretches make late autumn through spring the ideal window for outdoor activities, whereas the deeply overcast monsoon months from June to September are best avoided if sunshine is a priority.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Mumbai in December?

Accepted Answer

December is one of the most comfortable and reliably dry months in Mumbai, with warm, sunny days, cooler evenings, and virtually no rain. In December 2025, the city enjoyed clear skies from start to finish, making it a prime window for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Mumbai's December 2025 climate data shows:

- **Average temperature:** 25.0°C (77.0°F)
- **Average daytime high:** 33.5°C (92.2°F), with the warmest day reaching 34.9°C (94.8°F) on December 8
- **Average overnight low:** 18.3°C (65.0°F), dropping to a coolest 16.7°C (62.1°F) on December 22
- **Rainfall:** 0.0 mm (0.00 in) across the entire month, with zero rainy days
- **Sunshine:** roughly 11 hours per day, totalling about 340 hours

Humidity averaged a moderate 48.7%, a noticeable relief from Mumbai's sticky monsoon and post-monsoon months, while gentle winds of around 6.7 km/h (4.2 mph) kept conditions pleasant.

For visitors, December in Mumbai delivers near-perfect travel weather: sunny, dry, and warm enough for the beach yet cool enough in the evenings for comfortable exploring. Days are hot in direct sun, so light, breathable clothing and sun protection are sensible, but rain gear is unnecessary. With no precipitation recorded in December 2025 and abundant sunshine, this is widely considered one of the best times of year to experience Mumbai.
